Abstract

Background: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of the serious and debilitating challenges of diabetic patients, which entails a financial burden for both the patients and the health care systems. Although this problem can be prevented and treated by proper foot care techniques, many patients do not follow related recommendations. This study aims to rely on deep insight and knowledge to explain the perception of diabetic patients on DFU and identify appropriate care and support practices for DFU prevention and management.
Methodology: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted using a content analysis method. The participants included 15 diabetic patients referred to health care centers of Shahrekord enrolled using purposive sampling. The participants were then subjected to face-to-face and semi-structured interviews. Data collection continued until saturation was reached. Data collection and data analysis were conducted concurrently. Data were analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman’s techniques
Results: After data analysis, four m were extracted: an impossible destiny to a doomed fate, self-treatment, indifference to obsessive care, and care-inhibiting beliefs.
Conclusion: To obtain a correct understanding of standard foot care, the causes and process of foot ulcers, and the preventive care techniques and existing treatments, different strategies, such as peer education or sharing the experiences of other patients with ulcers with patients, who have not yet suffered from ulcers, can be used
