Abstract

Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is crucial for providing effective diabetes care, aiding in the control and prevention of complications. However, implementing EBP faces numerous barriers and challenges, particularly in developing countries. The present study aimed to identify barriers and challenges of evidence-based practice in providing diabetes care in Iran.
Methods: A qualitative approach was employed to explore the barriers and challenges of EBP in diabetes care in Iran. A total of 24 semi-structured interviews were conducted with different groups involved in providing diabetes care. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: Data analysis revealed four main categories, including lack of knowledge sources and skilled nurses proficient in evidence use, infrastructure and resource-related barriers, inadequate monitoring of knowledge utilization and evaluation of outcomes, and limited activities dedicated to maintaining and promoting continuous use of evidence.
Conclusion: Providing appropriate conditions and opportunities for healthcare personnel to update their knowledge regarding diabetes care, allocating more resources and facilities, and strengthening the monitoring and evaluation of the use of evidence in diabetes management are essential steps to improve EBP in different levels of diabetes care
