Abstract

Background: The main function of painting-based narrative history is to open the person to a new and inspiring interpretation of a personal life story. This study aimed to analyze the narrative history of patients with a schizophrenic disorder based on painting.
Methods: In this qualitative study, 10 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia hospitalized in a medical education center affiliated with Qazvin University of Medical Sciences, were researched using a purpose-based sampling method with maximum diversity at 2021. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews to achieve data saturation and analyzed via qualitative conventional content analysis approach.
Results: “Dissociated identity” is the main theme. Furthermore, “nervous breakdown, absurdity, and psychrupture” are three subthemes.
Conclusion: This study indicated that patients with schizophrenia have had different narratives of their life stages or during their illness by looking at drawings, and schizophrenia patients have the most fundamental changes such as their rupture, inactivity, and loss of ability. They endure the guidance of thought. The main function of this approach to open the person to a new and inspiring interpretation of a personal life story.
