Abstract

Background: Family participation in care can help ease the experience of hospitalization and reduce possible ‎complications for them. Despite the importance of involving family in the care of hospitalized older adult, ‎limited research has been done in this field. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate nurses' ‎perceptions of family participation in the care of hospitalized older adult.‎
Methods: Based on the qualitative study of content analysis, the perception of 13 nurses from two public ‎hospitals between 2023 and 2024 was collected through a semi-structured in-depth interview. Sampling was ‎done purposefully and continued until data saturation. The data was analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman ‎conventional content analysis.‎
Results: The analysis of the obtained data led to the emergence of two categories of comprehensive family ‎involvement in care and nurses' concern about the safety and quality of family care. Each of these categories ‎has sub-categories, and a total of 5 sub-categories appeared for 2 categories.‎
Conclusion: Nurses involved families in the physical and non-physical care of elderly patients and considered ‎it important in improving the quality of care for elderly patients, however, they expressed their concerns ‎regarding the safety and quality of family care. By increasing knowledge in the field of family participation in ‎care, the present study will help administrators, researchers, and clinical nurses to facilitate and improve ‎family participation in care.‎
