Abstract
Background: Family participation in care can help ease the experience of hospitalization and reduce possible complications for them. Despite the importance of involving family in the care of hospitalized older adult, limited research has been done in this field. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate nurses' perceptions of family participation in the care of hospitalized older adult.
Methods: Based on the qualitative study of content analysis, the perception of 13 nurses from two public hospitals between 2023 and 2024 was collected through a semi-structured in-depth interview. Sampling was done purposefully and continued until data saturation. The data was analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman conventional content analysis.
Results: The analysis of the obtained data led to the emergence of two categories of comprehensive family involvement in care and nurses' concern about the safety and quality of family care. Each of these categories has sub-categories, and a total of 5 sub-categories appeared for 2 categories.
Conclusion: Nurses involved families in the physical and non-physical care of elderly patients and considered it important in improving the quality of care for elderly patients, however, they expressed their concerns regarding the safety and quality of family care. By increasing knowledge in the field of family participation in care, the present study will help administrators, researchers, and clinical nurses to facilitate and improve family participation in care.
