Abstract
Introduction
While some individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) experience significant challenges, Despite the vast complexities of living with SCI, many people have better than projected outcomes and do not experience significant problems. This article explores the journeys of individuals with SCI, highlighting their experiences and strategies for overcoming adversity.
Method
This study employs a qualitative design with reflexive thematic analysis. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews, lasting on average 60 minutes, were conducted with twenty-nine interviews with 22 adult SCI from the local community in Iran. Data collection continued until thematic saturation was reached, meaning no new themes emerged from subsequent interviews. Data analysis was conducted using a combination of manual coding and MAXQDA 2020 software.
Result
Two major themes and seven categories were identified: “Achieving Peace in the Inner Battle”: This theme includes: returning to oneself and introspection, becoming a companion with one's own injury, and healing the soul through recognition of injury; “Expansion of Existential Capacity”: This theme emerged form: broad-mindedness and endurance in the face of pain, moving from outward appearances to inner depth, personal metamorphosis, and facing uncertainty in life.
Conclusion
Our findings reveal how individuals with SCI overcome their disability. individuals gain a deeper understanding of life post-injury, particularly for those struggling. These experiences encourage critical self-evaluation, growth, and resilience, allowing individuals to navigate uncertainty and trauma, see change as opportunities, and live meaningful lives. These challenges promote connection with oneself and true values and crossroads in life.
