Abstract
Background and purpose: Violence against Emergency nurses nurses is one of the common problems in the nursing profession that can have an adverse effect on both the nurse and the patient. The purpose of this study is to explain the factors related to workplace violence from the perspective of emergency department nurses.
Methods : This study was conducted qualitatively with the conventional content analysis approach. Sampling was started based on the purpose and continued until data saturation was reached. Data were collected from April to June 2024 . The main method of data collection was unstructured interviews. In total, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 20 nurses in the emergency department of medical education centers in Urmia. The interviews were analyzed by Graniham and Lundman method. Ethical considerations were applied in all phases of the study. MAXQDA version 10 software was used for data management.
Findings: The average work experience of the participants was 10.8 years . After analyzing the data, two main themes emerged as environmental factors with two sub-themes of need for special attention and standard care and interpersonal factors with two sub-themes of threatening behaviors and confrontational behaviors.
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that violence against emergency department nurses depends on interpersonal and environmental factors. Based on the findings of the current research, it is suggested to use nurses who are interested and have moral characteristics suitable for the conditions of the emergency department for nursing in these departments. Teaching the skills of anger management and empathy is also very important for the nurses of this department
