Abstract

Introduction: In Indonesian society, smoking among women is still generally considered unacceptable. However, many young women continue to smoke, and the incidence is rising.
Methods: This was a phenomenological study, which used in-depth interviews to explore the meaning of smoking among adolescents. This research included 11 young women who smoked while in junior high and high school (average age = 16 years). The researchers developed an in-depth interview guide based on current literature that was evaluated and confirmed by public health experts.
Results: This study reported that women see cigarettes as their closest friend, relieving them from the heavy load of their thoughts and worries. Curiosity, peer pressure, parental smoking status, family issues, and love problems are some of the initiators. Smoking is a behavioral practice that young women perceive independently based on their own perceptions. The existence of a negative public stigma towards female smokers contributes to the formation of meaning for adolescent female smokers. In this study, smoking is viewed as a loyal friend as well as a means of obtaining independence and happiness.
Conclusion: Since women have a higher health risk than males, a smoking prevention program needs to address teenagers' perspectives concerning smoking behaviors in connection to health and social issues. This approach can enhance the efficacy of health programs aimed at adolescent girls.
