Abstract

Background: Credentialing for primary healthcare (PHC) nurses is a new activity designed to ensure service quality through evaluation of nurses’ competence. This study aimed to examine the implementation of nurse credentialing in PHC within South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study was a descriptive qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. A total of 27 informants were selected using a purposive sampling approach with the type of maximum variation according to the implementation of credentialing. Data sources were triangulated by conducting in-depth interviews with informants from the health office, heads of PHC, and nurses in 9 districts/cities. Thematic analysis was conducted using qualitative data analysis software. Results: The study's results, showed that the informants' age range was between 31 to 54 years, and the tenure was between 5 to 36 years. The implementation of credentialing was reflected in three themes: multi-perception of credentialing, implementation of nurse credentialing, and factors related to the implementation of credentialing. Conclusion: The implementation of nurse credentialing in PHC is still not optimal. Therefore, as the organizer of credentials, the health office should adopt a multi-sectoral collaborative approach to develop sustainable frameworks that effectively support the competence of nurses and health workers in PHC.
