Abstract

Background: The Intensive Care Unit is one of the most critical departments in a hospital, and the quality of nursing care in this area is of utmost importance. The absence of certain aspects of care can have irreparable effects on patient health. This qualitative study aimed to Explain Exploring approaches to prevent Missed care missed nursing care from the perspective of Intensive Care Unit nurses.

Methods: In this qualitative study, a conventional content analysis approach was used to discover strategies for preventing Missed care in Intensive Care Unit. Data were collected from April to June 2024 through in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews with 14 participants selected through purposive sampling. The five-step method proposed by Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was used for data analysis( coding and categorization). MAXQDA version 10 software was utilized for data management.
Findings: The average experience of the participants in the study was 10.66 ± 0.54 years. From the data analysis, seven main categories emerged regarding the involvement of nurses in patient care decision-making: creating an integrated system capable of identifying and managing risk cases, specializing activities, ensuring nursing staff, enhancing the professional competence of nurses, improving intra- and inter-professional communication, and effective organizational support.

Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that Missed nursing care can be addressed through management strategies such as increasing organizational support for nurses, enhancing their motivation and work commitment, increasing interaction between nurses and the healthcare system, reducing the workload of nurses, improving the professional competence of nurses, and involving nurses in health and care decision-making.
