Abstract
Background: Emotional disturbance is a central pathological feature in various disorders, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder. Disgust is one of these main emotions that has received much attention in obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, research has been in the form of relationship discovery and quantitative studies that have also yielded contradictory results. Therefore, the present study aimed to create an in-depth picture of the experience of disgust in these individuals.
Methods: This study was qualitative and phenomenological in nature. The participants were 15 individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder who were selected through purposive sampling in 2023 . Data collection was also carried out through semi-structured interviews.
Results: In order to analyze the data were used Colaizzi analysis. Initially, 639 codes were extracted from the text analysis of the interviews. Then, the codes were categorized and placed into 5 main categories and 13 subcategories based on content and conceptual similarity. The main categories included ambivalence in the experience of disgust, anger-disgust fusion, immediate disgust, persistent disgust, and annoyance.
Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the experience of disgusted in this disorder is complex, has a strong relationship with the experience of anger, and can be different in different types of the disorder. Considering these cases and further investigating to clarify these connections is effective in understanding the nature of this disease and treating this disorder more effectively.
